PEOPLE in Leicester can do their bit to combat climate change and our throwaway culture by exchange unwanted goods at the Big Green Swap.

It will take place in the St Matthew’s Centre next weekend.

Described as an attempt to reduce the environmental and human effects of “fast fashion”, organisers are inviting people to swap clothing, toys, baby gear and arts and crafts materials.

The swap will be held in the Malabar Road centre, on Sunday, May 15, between 12pm and 3pm.

Climate Action Leicester, the main organisers of the event, have teamed up with other climate action groups including Women for Change, Quetzal, Leicester Green Guardians, Leicestershire Community Cupboard and the Leicester Nappy Library - which who lend out washable nappy kits.

In a statement, Climate Action Leicester said: “It’s usually low income and BME communities, women and children who suffer the most from climate change, both locally and across the world.

“Climate Action wants to work with other groups as much as possible, both to build community, increasing people’s capacity to cope with climate change, and to get more people thinking about the climate now so we can minimise it.”

People will have the opportunity to bring unloved or unused items to the

Big Green Swap. It will be divided into four sections.

Clothes: Both adult and children’s clothes and shoes; accessories such as bags, belts and jewellery; saris; abayas; headscarves/hijabs.

Craft equipment: pens; wool; paint; yarn; beads; felt tips; paint brushes; scissors; knitting needles; carving tools.

Children’s toys: books; board games; balls; Lego; puzzles.

Baby stuff: buggies and prams; slings; nightlights; baby monitors; breast pumps; changing mats; sterilising equipment.

All items should be clean or in good condition.

Organisers have requested those attending travel on foot, on the bus or via the newly installed Santander bikes in the city to reduce their impact on the environment.

A Reuse-Share-Swap themed vigil will also be taking place on Monday, May 9, noon to 1pm at the Clock Tower, to advertise the Big Green Swap.

For those who want to donate, but are unable to attend on the day, there will be drop-off points in Highfields, Knighton, Belgrave or off Narborough Rd until May 11. For more information or to help on the day, email:
