A CONCERT is taking place at De Montfort Hall tomorrow in a bid to raise tens of thousands of pounds for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine appeal.

The event, described by organisers as “a powerful and uplifting family event of hope and reflection”, will see several Ukrainian refugee families in attendance.

It will be hosted by the BBC’s Amy Payne and ITV’s Rajiv Popat and will feature a celebration of Ukrainian and UK music and dance.

Guests include Jonny Fines, the EAGA Gospel Choir and the awardwinning Orlyk Dancers.

All ticket sales and bar profits will be going to DEC’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Christian Smaditch, one of the organisers, is hoping the event will reinforce the message to these families that “Leicester stands with Ukraine”.

A number of videos of support have been received from several personalities with links to the city and county, and these will be broadcast during the concert. These include Julie Etchingham (ITN News at 10), Martine Croxall (BBC News 24), Mark Peachy and the cast of West End’s Dear Evan Hansen, Tom Hopper (Game of Thrones, Doctor Who), Leicester Riders basketball team and the Leicester Tigers.

The concert has also been promoted on social media by high-profile Leicester celebrities, including Sam Bailey and Gary Lineker.

Leicester’s Concert for Ukraine is fully supported by city mayor Sir Peter Soulsby and Leicester City Council.

“Not only are they donating 100 per cent of the ticket sales and all bar profits, but also all car parking charges,” said Christian.

“It is also heartwarming that most staff working on that day are donating their salary to the DEC appeal.”

Christian said a host of dignitaries, including the Lord Lieutenant of

Leicestershire, the city’s lord mayor, the High Sherriff of Leicestershire and local MPs had indicated they will attend.

“We are humbled that so many people are supporting this high-profile event,” he added.

Tickets for the concert, which starts at 4pm, cost £20. They are available from the De Montfort Hall booking office on 0116 233 3111, or calling in person, or via the website at:
