LOUGHBOROUGH Cemetery has been targeted by vandals who sprayed graffiti over war grave signs, the entrance sign and private property.

Charnwood Borough Council moved quickly to have the offensive daubs removed, but the attacks on the Leicester Road site sparked anger among social media users.

A Facebook post urged residents to “oust the morons who think it’s funny to desecrate cemeteries” as users called for the culprits to be found.

The post on the Spotted: In and Around Loughborough Facebook page said: “Can we all please get together and oust the morons who think it’s funny to desecrate cemeteries including war grave signs, and people’s private property? Someone out there must know the scum that continue to tag railway bridges, fences and just about everything as fun.

“There are enough clues in these pictures. There must be shops where these paints are purchased from, just more care when selling them to youths is all that’s needed.

“I’m sure together we can stop this blight from ruining our town and country.”

One person said: “It’s disgusting that the cemeteries are targeted by vandalism. It’s people’s resting place and their families come and take care of their resting places, going up as much as they can to get peace by sitting with their lost husband/wife, children and grandparents and friends.” Another said: “It’s not the council’s fault that some parents haven’t got control over their children. How can they let them walk the streets all hours of the night without a care In the world where they are?” Another claimed her partner saw some of the culprits, wring: “My hubby saw three of them, girls and boys with hoodies, around 16 years old. They also had rucksacks with them. “They were messing around there in the cemetery around that area. Problem with today’s society, no discipline.” One person posted pictures of their vandalised vehicle, saying “We still need to find these antisocial people. Let’s keep the pressure up.” A Charnwood Borough Council spokesman said: “We were disappointed to see that over the weekend the sign to Loughborough Cemetery had been vandalised. As soon as we were made aware of the vandalism, the sign was cleaned immediately.”
