“BLUE By Choice, Green By Nature” is the motto and driving force behind a new eco initiative launched by the charitable arm of Leicester City FC.

The programme, called Eco Foxes and with the aim of helping to tackle climate change, sees Leicester City in the Community working alongside Leicester City Council and the Canal and River Trust.

The charity wants communities in Leicester to participate in the programme as it provides education in schools and outdoor learning workshops.

The initiative encourages participants to carry out tasks that promote sustainability and tackle climate change, such as planting trees, litter picking and recycling, and provides help to people who want to be “greener”.

The club’s environmental sustainability coordinator, Dr Alex Evans, said: “Environmental sustainability is important because it ensures that we work in ways so that people can have a safe, healthy and affordable life now, and for future generations to come.

“To achieve that, we are making sure that we make the most of renewable energy sources, we are limiting our carbon impact on nature and we are also trying to educate and provide awareness

of things such as climate change.

“Because we are a community organisation, we really want to help support anyone who is interested in sustainability or those who don’t yet know how they can help.

“We want to provide education and resources for them.

“There will be lots of opportunities for people in Leicester to get involved, such as with things to do with cleaning up the environment or doing social action on climate change, and even fun things like planting trees and litter picks.

“We are going to organise community events for people to get together and create a more sustainable Leicester.”

As part of the Eco Foxes programme, Leicester City in the Community members will be taking part in so-called “green action months”.

During these, staff from the organisation will take part in month-long challenges promoting a greener and more environmentally friendly way of life.

Dr Evans said: “We will be trying new things such as having a vegan week, where they reduce their reliance on meat and dairy, and using reusable bags instead of plastic ones.

“We are even trying to get people in the organisation to grow things such as vegetables and wild flowers to benefit animals in gardens.

““While it’s something we are doing as staff, we are also encouraging external participants and wider community members to take part and try these things at home.”
