Guide to showcase borough’s heritage
A GUIDE on Charnwood’s heritage has been launched to try to help boost tourism.
The Discover Charnwood Heritage Guide, produced by the borough council with Loughborough Heritage Forum and Leicestershire Promotions, will be available locally and distributed regionally to encourage people to visit the area.
The guide gives an insight into the likes of Loughborough’s Taylor and Co Bell Foundry, the last remaining major bell foundry in the UK, Great Central Railway, Stoneywell Cottage and the Carillon Tower.
It also features Charnwood’s unique geological heritage as the borough’s landscapes were formed 600 million years ago and contain the oldest fossils in England.
The guide comes soon after the launch of Discover Charnwood, a website to showcase the area to visitors.
Councillor Shona Rattray, lead member for business support, said: “We have some incredible history and heritage in the borough and the guide and website will help more people discover it and hopefully pay us a visit.
“Tourism is already important to our economy, but we want to build on that and bring more visitors to Charnwood, which will support a range of businesses.
“I would like to thank Loughborough Heritage Forum for helping to put this guide together.”
Jill Vincent, of the forum, said: “We are very proud of Charnwood and this guide is a great way of showcasing the fascinating heritage it has to offer.
“I enjoyed being part of the process of putting the guide together. I hope it will help boost visitor numbers.”
The guide can also be downloaded from Discover Charnwood website.
