VARDY AT THE DOUBLE FOR OVERDUE WIN

MADDISON ALSO SCORES AGAINST FORMER CLUB AS CITY MOVE BACK INTO TOP HALF WITH THEIR FIRST THREE-POINT HAUL FOR A MONTH

-

JAMIE Vardy struck twice early in the second half as Leicester City moved back into the top half of the Premier League table with a morale-boosting win last night.

Vardy struck a quick-fire double to help overcome a stubborn Norwich City, and ex-Canaries star James Maddison then added some gloss to the scoresheet with a third against his already-relegated former club.

The win was City’s first in six league games, stretching all the way back to when they beat Crystal Palace on April 10.

Norwich, rooted to the foot of the table, gave City a game and a scare when Teemu Pukki hit the post just before the break, but it was as close as they came to a shock win.

Maddison, who topped off the win with his 15th goal of the season, said there was no room for sentiment.

“It is always nice to score against any former team,” he said. “Norwich... hold a special place in my heart (but) it is a ruthless game.

“I wish them all the best but I was delighted with the goal.

“We are in a bit of a limbo where we can’t get European football or go down.

“Results of late have not been great so, just as professionals, we wanted to bounce back and give the best account of ourselves.

“We are trying to get back to being a team that won the FA Cup and reached Europe.

“We want to take as many points as we can in the remaining game and finish the season on a positive.

“I think we have underachieved – we had planned to overachieve and roll around with the big boys at the top but it does not always work like that, that is Premier League football.”
