IMPROVEMENTS are to be made to a 2km stretch of towpath beside the River Soar in Loughborough in a bid to make it more attractive for cyclists, walkers and boating enthusiasts.

An £885,000 grant will be used to improve the footpath that runs between Moor Lane Bridge and Belton Road, with improved signs, access points, fewer barriers and more moorings for boaters.

It is hoped the project will go some way to turning the River Soar into an attraction for the town and becomes part of people’s daily lives.

The project is being spearheaded by The Canal & River Trust, with backing from the Loughborough Town Deal.

Phil Mulligan, regional director for the Canal & River Trust, said: “Research shows that spending time by water can help us to feel happier and healthier, and these improvements will make it easier for people in Loughborough to enjoy some time by the river as part of their daily lives.

“We’re very grateful that the Town Deal Board recognises the importance of the river to the town and look forward to making it even better for local communities and visitors alike.”

It is one of 11 projects backed by the Loughborough Town Deal board, totalling over £40 million of investment for the town.

The board is co-chaired by Councillor Jonathan Morgan, leader of Charnwood Borough Council, and Dr Nik Kotecha, chairman of Loughborough-based Morningside Pharmaceuticals.

Coun Morgan said: “I am delighted the Loughborough Town Deal Board can confirm this funding for the Canal & River Trust.

“The plans to improve the towpath running alongside the River Soar will make a huge difference for walkers and cyclists in this area. It will also create a much more sustainable travel corridor in the town.”

Dr Kotecha said: “The river in Loughborough provides us with a very real link to our industrial heritage, but also to our ambitions to make the town a more pleasant and greener place to travel around.

“Making the river more attractive will give another strong reason for people to come to Loughborough, spend some time here and therefore support the visitor economy.”

Jane Hunt, MP for Loughborough and a member of the Town Deal Board, said: “These plans are hugely welcome and I am really pleased to see Town Deal money being used to fund improvements to the towpath.

“It will provide an attractive place to walk or cycle right next to our historic waterways. I am looking forward to seeing it once the works have been completed.”
