LEICESTER City striker Jamie Vardy has claimed part of Wayne Rooney’s testimony was nonsense after the Derby County manager took the stand at the Wagatha Christie trial yesterday.

Wayne, giving evidence under oath, said he had spoken to Jamie about his wife Rebekah’s behaviour at the Euros in 2016 and that she needed to “calm down”.

Standing on the steps of the High Court in London, Jamie said: “Wayne is talking nonsense. He must be confused because he never spoke to me about issues concerning Becky’s media work at Euro 2016.

“There was nothing to speak about, I know this because I discuss everything with Becky.”

In his evidence, Wayne described the “awkward” alleged conversation with Jamie about Rebekah.

He told the court: “It was awkward for me to have to speak to a team-mate regarding his wife.”

Wayne said the pair of them went to a games room to sit down and have a chat. Wayne had a coffee and Jamie had a Red Bull. Wayne said: “It was such an awkward moment for me to have to speak to him.”

Wayne claimed in court he was “100 per cent” sure he had a chat with Jamie, after he was asked to by the England manager at the time, Roy Hodgson.

Rebekah Vardy previously told the court that her husband Jamie told her he never had a talk with Wayne regarding her media activities causing trouble for the England squad during the Euros in 2016.

Wayne’s wife Coleen and Rebekah have been embroiled in the bitter battle since Coleen accused Rebekah of leaking “false stories” about her private life in October 2019.

Mum-of-four Coleen came to the conclusion after carrying out a monthlong “sting operation” where she used her Instagram Stories to post fake scenarios and seeing which ones ended up in the news.

Speaking in court yesterday, Wayne claimed he was unaware of his wife’s “sting operation”. The former Manchester United captain said he “didn’t want to get involved” as his wife became “frustrated” over alleged leaks.

He told the court: “I’m not big on social media and I didn’t want to get involved. My wife is an independent woman who does her own thing and I didn’t want to get involved in what the situation was.”

He added that social media was the “least” of his worries amid helping his wife with their four children. He said: “She made me aware of it and that was the last time I actually spoke about it.”
