Lingdale pairing clinch Daily Mail Foursomes
TOURNAMENT FINAL WAS DELAYED BY BAD WEATHER
LINGDALE GC members Barbara Suffolk and Sue Hollwell are the new Daily Mail Foursomes champions. They won the long-delayed final at Slaley Hall, in Northumberland.
Thousands of amateur golfers from all over the country entered the competition, but the Lingdale pair – Barbara off a five handicap and Sue off eight – proved formidable at every stage.
To reach the later stages, they had wins against several local and regional clubs, including Birstall, Forest Hill, Beedles Lake, Radcliffe on Trent, Oakridge, Market Harborough and Arkley.
Their successes saw them go to Slaley Hall for two days at the end of last season. On the first day there, Lingdale beat Haywards Heath in the last 16, then put out Cardiff in the quarter-finals – but at this point bad weather intervened.
The competition was abandoned and eventually rescheduled for this month. They tackled Whitecraigs GC in the semi-final which found them in outstanding form.
The Lingdale pair had to give them no fewer than 14 shots, but went on to win by a decisive 6 and 5 margin, playing what they described as “the round of our lives” and went into the final, where they met Sherborne. Lingdale had to give shots again, but despite this, and although not attaining the playing peak of their morning round, they comfortably held off their rivals to record a 2 and 1 victory.
Club manager at Lingdale, Andy Mee, said: “We are all absolutely delighted by their success, especially
after such a long delay in getting the tournament completed on this occasion.
“It is a prestigious title for them and for the club.”
