106 county towns, villages to have their roads ‘dressed’

SURFACE WORK OVER SUMMER TO HELP PREVENT POTHOLES

- By TOM MACK thomas.mack@reachplc.com @T0Mmack

county’s highways teams will be out in 106 villages and towns around Leicestershire resurfacing roads over May, June and July.

They will be treating the equivalent of 75 full-sized football pitches over the next three months.

The authority said the surface dressing will help keep the county moving and maintain the condition of the roads.

The job involves putting an extra protective layer of bitumen and stone chippings on the surfaces.

The work prevents water and air getting into the Tarmac underneath, which stops potholes forming. The stone chippings on top increase the anti-skid qualities of the road, improving safety.

Councillor Maggie Wright, deputy cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Our surface dressing programme is remarkable in the value for money it provides and the improvements to the road networks it offers.

“By taking preventative measures now we can avoid problems on the road in the future, saving the taxTHE payer money while keeping Leicestershire moving and making our roads safer, too”.

She said that with more than 2,575 miles of road to maintain across the county, this effort to tackle problems on the roads before they form can reduce reactive maintenance and save money. According to Leicestershire County Council, surface dressing is up to 10 times more cost effective than conventional resurfacing, helping to maintain a high-quality road network.

The work, which is carried out every summer, will be spread across the three months to reduce the impact on motorists. The work is dependent on acceptable road temperatures and dry weather for the process to fully take effect.

It is hoped that all surface dressing will be completed by September and road users are being thanked for their patience with necessary roadworks.

The weather-dependent plan is for work to take place in the following locations:
