Very sad if Corah added to city’s lost history

-

READING in a recent edition about the proposed demolition of the Corah factory for housing (“Historic factory could make way for massive housing scheme in city,” May 12) it saddens me as so much of Leicester’s heritage has been lost.

The building has been damaged by fire and should have been looked after many years ago, rather than left to deteriorate.

It is a major landmark and leaving a very small part is so very sad as it means nothing to people.

One such building was Lewis’s. I remember having a meal there overlooking the city.

At Christmas it was magic, with moving figures in the windows so that shoppers could look at them as they passed.

Today, it is a nondescript area as modern shops have replaced everything.

Sadly, lots of historic buildings have been lost and even now I see the empty Palais de Danse, in Humberstone Gate, in such a sorry state. Outside is a plaque describing the building’s history.

Many people can look back with fondness at times meeting friends there.

Another factory is the British Steam Specialities Fleet House, near Lee Circle, which was last used in 2015.

Plans were submitted for demolition and housing there.

I cannot understand why the city council lacks the urgency to look after these historic buildings or find out who the owners are and make them do something with them

They seem more interested in spending money on road improvements rather than historic buildings.

They should pursue or spend some money of these historic buildings, as it is our heritage.

When travelling abroad I see fine old buildings which have been renovated and used either for light industry or housing and have been left as they were built and in lovely condition.

In our country we leave them to rot and decay and left to the arsonists and vandals to destroy.

It happens everywhere, as recently a large historic mill in Keighley was destroyed by fire, allegedly by arsonists. It had been empty for years.

Losing Corah will be a great loss to everyone.

On the approach to the city on the A50 at Frog Island, near to Slater Street, there was a fire which destroyed a large factory. Nothing has been done for years.

At one time the school was threatened with closure but money was wasted at Fosse Road with contaminated land.

The school I consider a gem as it was built in 1885. If it had been vacated I am sure it would have been left to deteriorate.

I hope that some solution is made to do something about Corah and save it as it needs a lot of money, possibly from the city council?

Or will it be left to owners who seem to want to make a lot of money from housing?
