Cartwright is crowned county amateur champ
COSBY PLAYER FINISHES ONE STROKE AHEAD OF FIELD AT HINCKLEY GC
COBY Cartwright (Cosby) has been crowned the county amateur champion, writes Jennifer Prentice.
Cartwright won the title at Hinckley GC with his one-under-par 141 aggregate after his 67-74 rounds to finish a stroke ahead of the field.
Alistair Kinnaird (Kirby Muxloe), a former professional and reinstated as an amateur this year, was runnerup with his 69-73-142 level par return.
There were three players on 143 – Richard Wale (The Leicestershire), Scott Wormleighton (Birstall) and Will Plant (Cosby), all with 72-71 cards.
Cartwright took a firm grip on the tournament with his opening round of four-under-par, which included nine birdies.
But it was a bit of a roller-coaster round because he also had three bogeys and a double.
Over the front half of the course, Cartwright was four-under with birdies at the 1st, threein-a-row from the 4th, then on the back nine he was level with birdies at 10, back-to-back at 12 and 13, another at 15 and at the uphill par three 18th hole.
It is the latest major county amateur success for Cartwright, who has won the 72-holes spring tournament for the Fraser Trophy for the last two years and also won the Leicestershire Fox Open Scratch tournament last season.
Cartwright said he was delighted to win another of the county’s top titles and paid tribute to the county union for the way in which it ran all the tournaments and to Hinckley for the excellent condition of the course.
After the first round, Kinnaird was lying second with his 69 which included four birdies – two in each half, at 1 and 4, 10 and 13, but bogeys at the 2nd and 14th holes.
Luke Burrows (Cosby) was on one-under-70 and scored 74 in his second round, with Josh Hayes of the host club and Arshad Tarmahomed (Scraptoft), locked on level par 71, both in contention too. The Corah Shield for the leading county club team went to Cosby with their 428 total through Cartwright (141), Will Plant (143) and
Luke Burrows (144). Immediate past county GU president Richard Barker (Longcliffe) presented the awards and congratulated the winners.
