Rutland rider on reserve list for world championships
RUTLAND-BASED rider Richard Jones and his horse Alfies Clover have been included in the list of 10 reserves from which the team for the Eventing World Championships in September will be selected.
Their good performance at the Badminton 5* Horse Trials in May, right, did not go unnoticed by the British Equestrian and the British Eventing selectors.
The horse and rider combinations selected for the squad will then travel to Pratoni del Vivaro in Italy in September.
Richard said: “The UK has some of the best eventing horse and rider combinations at the moment.
“Witness the Badminton International Trials this year where Alfie came 10th, with just one Irish and one US horse placed in the top 10 – all the rest were Brits.”
Team Jones, based at Lowlands Farm in Rutland, has hit the 2022 equestrian season at a gallop.
Three of their young event horses all put in excellent performances recently at the Rockingham International Horse
Trials. With just three months to go to Burghley 5*, the next step for Alfie will be Burgham 4* at the end of this month.
That will be followed by Burghley 5* at the beginning of September – or maybe a trip to Italy for the world championships if the combination are selected.
While Richard is emerging as a top international eventer – he finished in the top 10 at Blenheim in 2018 – his wife Victoria is also going from strength to strength, building her international dressage career.
