‘NECESSARY BECAUSE OF HEAVY USAGE’

ONE of the main thoroughfares in the city centre has been closed to traffic for seven months.

Leicester City Council closed Belvoir Street on Tuesday to resurface the pavement.

The work is part of a planned revamp of that area of the city and will reflect recent changes in nearby streets.

New block paving will match that of Pocklingtons Walk and Horsefair Street once the work is complete.

Belvoir Street last had a big makeover six years ago but the council said “heavy usage” has led to the need for the latest work.

It said the £300,000 scheme is part of continued investment in an “important retail area of the city centre”.

A spokesman for the council said: “The existing surface needs replacing because of wear and tear due to heavy usage day and night and the impact of essential utility service repairs.

“Improving the footpaths with new block paving will further enhance the look and feel of Belvoir Street.

“It will also provide a much more durable surface that will be easier to maintain and repair in the long term.”

The new surface will replace a resin-bound gravel pavement that was installed as part of the last revamp.

Work is expected to be completed, in phases, across seven months. Belvoir Street will be closed to traffic between Granby Street and Bowling Green Street while the work is under way.

Access for deliveries and pedestrian access will be maintained while a traffic diversion will be in place.
