BIRTHDAY PARTY ALSO HONOURS

A WOMEN-only gym that has raised £4,500 for county causes has celebrated its second birthday.

On Friday evening, Gymophobics Wigston, based on Leicester Road, had a party for members, friends and family and enjoyed an awards presentation at Wigston Liberal Club.

Awards gifted to staff and members included “most glamorous member”, “slimmers of the year” and “member of the year”.

A special mention was also sent to Emma at Loros hospice for kicking off the evening with a welcome talk.

A gym spokesman said: “Final numbers are to be confirmed but we raised around £350 for the hospice from the charity raffle on the evening, meaning as a gym we have raised £2,015 for the hospice and altogether £4,500 for various charities including Loros, Macmillan, Make a Wish UK, Cancer Research UK and Breast Cancer UK since opening.”

One of the gym’s owners, Sara, said: “Our members really do go the extra mile when it comes to our fund-raising events and putting on parties is just one way we try and show our appreciation to them for their ongoing support and efforts in the gym.

“It was a fantastic evening to round off another great year, with lots of dancing involved and this year we invited a local henna artist down who provided our ladies with some great henna designs which was very popular.

“We look forward to another year with our members, and our next support for the hospice will be completing the Leicester half marathon in October at Victoria Park.”

Neil Davies set up the gym with his mum Sara because she wanted to join a ladies-only fitness venue after feeling intimidated in other gyms.

He said: “Our main slogan is ‘no mirrors, no pressure, no men’ – so there are no mirrors in our main gym area and it’s a really friendly environment.”
