One-way system to be installed in streets

-

A neW one-way traffic system will soon come into effect in a residential area of Leicester.

The changes in the Frisby Road area, in north evington, are to ease congestion and parking issues in the neighbourhood, Leicester City Council has said.

Frisby Road is set to become one-way in a north-westerly direction from the end of the month.

Drivers will also only be able to travel through Prestwold Road and Willow Brook Road in a south-easterly direction. Cyclists can continue to travel both ways.

The council has also announced there will be free parking in Frisby Road, with drivers able to leave their cars as long as they like. new parking spaces will be added to the street.

This is intended to reduce unauthorised pavement parking and make footpaths safer for pedestrians, the authority added.

The changes are set to come into effect from Monday, May 29.

Signs are already in place in the area to alert drivers and new road markings are to follow.

The work will cost about £20,000 and are being funded from the council’s annual £2.5 million Transport Improvement Works programme.

Councillor Adam Clarke, deputy city mayor for transport, said: “This work is being carried out to address the numerous concerns that residents in the area have raised with us around parking and traffic safety.

“Many of these residential streets are not wide enough for vehicles travelling in opposite directions to pass each other safely, meaning that people tend to park their cars partly on the pavement to try to make more room.

“However that makes pavements difficult to use, especially for people with pushchairs, wheelchairs or partially sighted people. Creating a one-way system should improve traffic flow, free up pavements and reduce the risk of parked cars being damaged as other vehicles try to squeeze past.”
