We haven’t been good enough this season, admits Evans

LEICESTER City captain Jonny Evans has admitted the team “haven’t been good” this season as they battle to avoid relegation.

The Foxes could be relegated if results go against them this weekend and they lose at Newcastle United on Monday night.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football after City’s 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool, Evans said it was hard to explain the drop in the team’s performances this season. But he did praise the team’s efforts against Liverpool.

“It’s hard to put your finger on it,” said Evans, pictured.

“We haven’t been good this season and that’s just the bottom line, you look at the results and we’ve lost too many games.

“Other things have to be better, it’s as simple as that.

“We’ve got two more games left and we have to put in the same effort we showed tonight, the same commitment.

“We’ve got a tough game away at Newcastle and then the last home game of the season, but we’ll be competing like we did tonight.”

Evans played 89 minutes against Liverpool before being replaced by Australian Harry Souttar.

It was his first start in the Premier League since a 2-1 defeat against Bournemouth back in October.

Speaking about his return to action, club captain Evans also revealed how other players have been playing through the pain barrier in recent weeks.

“It’s been frustrating for me, maybe six or seven months, I have a lot of muscle injuries, but the manager spoke to me yesterday,” he said.

“I just wanted to give what I could to the team like every lad out there, there’s a lot of players playing with knocks and niggles and it’s just part of it.”
