Fire breaks out in takeaway kitchen

-

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a fire that broke out at a shop in Green Lane Road, in Spinney Hills, yesterday morning.

Desi Sweet Centre, close to the Piccadilly Cinema, had a kitchen fire while the owners were away from the store – with the flames believed to have gone into the extractor fan and escalating the incident.

The occupier of the flat above the shop called the fire service shortly after 8am, and four engines were sent out to tackle the blaze.

The road was closed between Percival Street and Harewood Street and nearby residents were evacuated from their homes while crews worked to extinguish the fire with dampening down taking place followed by an investigation.

Nobody was hurt in the fire, which remained on the ground floor.

Sukhjinder Kaur, whose family owns the takeaway business, confirmed everyone was safe.

She said: “None of us were inside the kitchen when it started, but there is a family of five who were upstairs and they called us to say there was a fire.

“We shut up at 5pm (Sunday) and then the fire somehow started in the takeaway kitchen this morning. Luckily everyone is safe.”

A Fire Control spokesman confirmed the fire was out at 9.50am. “An investigation will begin shortly,” they said.

Traffic has returned to normal and the road is clear following the earlier incident.

Crew manager John Gregor, from the city’s Eastern fire station, said: “It was a fire in the kitchen in the rear of a takeaway building. There were people inside, but everyone got out.

“It was dealt with fairly quickly by the fire service.”

Traffic had been backed up for most of the morning due to the fire but the road cleared by noon.

Traffic website Inrix reported: “Traffic returned to normal (after) earlier building fire on Green Lane Road in both directions from Spinney Hill Road to St Barnabas Road.”
