RESIDENTS of Thurmaston are invited to a drop-in event to find out more about proposals to develop nine new bungalows in the village.

Charnwood Borough Council is planning to create nine bungalows to replace St Michael’s Court, a sheltered housing complex in Melton Road.

The event will take place on Tuesday, June 6 between 2pm-7.30pm at Elizabeth Park Sports Centre, in Thurmaston.

Residents and businesses in the area will be able to find out more about the project, view proposed designs as well as offer feedback and ask any questions they may have.

Councillor Colin Hamilton, the council’s deputy leader and lead member for public and private sector housing, said: “I would encourage residents and businesses in the area to come along to find out more about the proposals.

“As a council, we want to invest in housing which meets the needs of residents.

“St Michael’s Court was built over 50 years ago and no longer provides the quality and type of accommodation people want in that area.

“Not only will the event give people a chance to see the proposed designs but also they will also be able to provide feedback and ask questions about the scheme.”

The proposed bungalows have been designed for people with mobility issues.

The scheme is at an early stage and is subject to planning permission.

St Michael’s Court was built around 1970 and is said to no longer meet the needs of older tenants.

The complex comprises mainly of bedsits with shared bathrooms which are difficult to let.

The ageing sheltered accommodation also has long corridors which are difficult for people with mobility issues.

The council has considered a replacement sheltered scheme, however, data from the housing register has shown that people need ground floor accommodation, and it says the proposed bungalow scheme will meet that need.
