THE final phase of resurfacing work on a major Leicester road is on schedule.

Northgate Street will close today between the junctions with Abbey Gate and Sanvey Gate from 8pm to 5am for up to three nights, Leicester City Council said.

The closures will allow resurfacing to be carried out at the junctions to side streets.

Martin Fletcher, Leicester City Council’s director of city highways, said previously: “Major resurfacing work of this nature is vital in order to keep the city’s streets in good condition to cope with the demands of a growing city.”

Work began on Frog Island and Northgate Street, between its junctions with Abbey Gate and Pingle Street, on Monday, March 25, with road closures in place for 10 days.

The works were paused over the Easter bank holiday weekend, as traffic was expected to be busier.

Work also started at the Abbey Gate junction with Woodgate.

This required Abbey Gate to be closed to traffic, between Bradgate Street and Woodgate, for three days. Resurfacing works then continued along Frog Island up to its junction with Pingle Street. Diversions were in place via St Margaret’s Way, Ravensbridge Drive, Anstey Lane, Glenfrith Way, and Groby Road during the works.

Bus services that normally used Frog Island and Northgate Street to Woodgate used St Margaret’s Way and Ravensbridge Drive.

An inbound lane closure remains in place on Frog Island and Northgate until late April before work begins today on the final phase of resurfacing.
