PM’s wife in visit to military rehab unit

AKSHATA Murty, the wife of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, visited a military rehabilitation centre near Loughborough this week.

The Conservative Party said Ms Murty met with injured military personnel and staff supporting their rehabilitation at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre on the Stanford Hall estate.

The centre provides care for servicemen and women who have suffered physical injuries on the battlefield, as well those who have neurological injuries or illnesses as a result of their service. The organisation is run by the Ministry of Defence but is privately funded.

The £300 million facility was opened in early 2020 and is separate from the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) that is expected to be complete in 2025.

The 70-bed NRC facility is expected to help 750 NHS patients each year.

Ms Murty said on Tuesday: “I had the huge pleasure of visiting the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, to see first hand the incredible support available to our service personnel.

“The centre is a key aspect of the military moral component - our responsibility to care for those protecting us in a holistic manner - and it’s something I care passionately about.

“The centre is also at the forefront of the ground-breaking UK response to the war in Ukraine - training combat medics, sharing clinical advice and developing rehabilitation centres to ensure the best possible care for the injured Ukrainian soldiers.”

Commanding officer, group captain Claire Myhill said: “It was a pleasure to host Ms Murty at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre today.

“It was a great opportunity to showcase the high quality occupationallyfocused rehabilitation delivered here.

“The visit enabled interactions with patients and staff and to highlight the support which the centre and the wider Defence Medical Services are providing to our Ukrainian colleagues.”

MS MURTY MET PERSONNEL AND STAFF BASED AT STANFORD HALL

A slightly different take today as we continue our nostalgic look through the archives for anything to do with Leicester’s Town Hall Square.

Here we have Leicester City fans gathered at the square to welcome back their heroes, despite a 3-1 defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup final the previous weekend.

It was the third time in 14 years the team had returned from the Wembley showpiece empty-handed - well, with losers’ medals after suffering a similar fate against Wolves in 1949 and Tottenham in 1961.

The 1963 team - Banks, Sjoberg, Norman, McLintock, King, Appleton (c), Riley, Cross, Keyworth, Gibson, Stringfellow - had been favourites against a Manchester United side that had only just managed to avoid relegation to the second tier.

Sadly, when the game began, the form book went out the window and a Red Devils side, managed by Matt Busby, outplayed the Foxes.

Denis Law put them 1-0 up, and David Herd doubled the lead. Though Ken Keyworth gave Leicester hope with 10 minutes to go, Herd quickly restored United’s two-goal lead, pictured below.

The Foxes suffered another defeat, to Manchester City, in 1969, before it was fifth-time lucky in 2021, when they beat Chelsea 1-0 to finally get their hands on the old trophy
