Dennis hands his Formula E world crown to Wehrlein
JAKE Dennis’s reign as Formula E world champion was officially ended at the weekend as Germany’s Pascal Wehrlein clinched the title in a thrilling London finale to the season.
Going into the last two E-Prix, Dennis still had a mathematical chance of retaining the title he claimed in sensational fashion in London last year.
The 29-year-old Andretti ace was seventh in the drivers’ championship before the London finale, 45 points adrift of series leader, New Zealand’s Nick Cassidy, with only 58 points left to win.
However, former Bosworth Academy and Loughborough College student Dennis was tipped to make a late charge because of his amazing record of success in London.
But his outside hopes of still being world champion were ended in the first E-Prix when Dennis could only finish 16th, well out of the points.
Wehrlein of TAG Heuer Porsche won the first race and he was crowned world title in the second race after fighting off fierce competition from Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy.
The season finale race saw three contenders – Wehrlein, Evans, and Cassidy – entering the final round separated by just seven points.
This set the stage for one of the most exhilarating races in Formula E history, marking a spectacular end to the GEN3 era and to Season 10.
Britain’s Oliver Rowland finished top of the podium for Nissan, while Wehrlein’s second-place finish secured his maiden Drivers’ World Championship by a seven-point margin over Evans.
Cassidy finished third in the standings while Dennis, who failed to complete the second race, finished seventh in the drivers’ championship.
Jaguar celebrated their first top-tier motorsport title since 1991 by clinching the Teams’ World Championship.
In a double victory for Jaguar TCS Racing, the British team also secured the inaugural Manufacturers’ Trophy, narrowly edging out TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team by just four points.
