Spurs game is our focus – McAteer

EVERY training session and every pre-season match this summer is with the Premier League opener against Tottenham in mind, Leicester City winger Kasey McAteer has said.

There’s four weeks to go until the big kick-off at the King Power Stadium, but the fixture is at the forefront of everybody’s minds as City look to get themselves ready.

For players like McAteer, whose Premier League experience is limited, it means the excitement is building each day the game draws closer.

“The manager has been so big on us being Premier League ready,” McAteer told the club.

“We know how many days are left until that first game and how many pre-season games we’ve got to get where we need to be.

“That game, it doesn’t get much better than that, Spurs at the King Power Stadium. It’s what every kid dreams of, wanting to play in the Premier League.

“Hopefully, if I can keep myself fit, show myself to the manager and the staff, and get the opportunity. That’d be amazing.

“I know what it takes to get into the squad we’ve got. We’ve got so much talent in our side, I need to make sure I’m ready.”

While the Premier League is a big step up from the Championship, McAteer says they must keep in mind how successful they were last term, while also adding in Steve Cooper’s tweaks.

“Everybody’s really excited for the gaffer’s new ways and new approaches, how he sees the game,” added the 22-year-old.

“We respect that and we’re trying to implement that every day. He’s been great.

“He’s said he’s not going to change too much from last season, but he’s going to put his own style on things.

“Last season was a long season but one we can reflect on with great pride.

“There were moments we’ll remember for the rest of our lives.

“I think it’s about remembering we had that success and we need to carry that into the Premier League, which is where we all want to be playing out football.”
