Mixed bag for results
The ladies’fourth team from HelensburghTennis Club travelled toWeir Recreation with Jane Carroll and Fiona MacLaren coming up against a very strong pair.
They fought hard, with many of the games going to deuce.
But in the end their opponents were too strong and they lost all three sets.
Barbara Gillies and Susan Russell at second couple took the first set 6-3 but struggled in the windy conditions and lost the next to sets 4-6, 3-6.
Sue Macrae and Frankie Hanmer at third couple didn’t let their opponents intimidate them and secured the opening set 6-4.
They let the second set slip but came back to take the final set 6-1.
The final score was a 3-6 defeat.
The team then travelled to Bishopton where they got their first win. Shona Bulloch and Fiona MacLaren at first couple found themselves 2-5 down in the opening set.
They started to focus on one particular player pressuring her into making mistakes which had the desired effect as they took the set 7-5.
They then went on to take the next set 6-3 but lost the third 2-6.
Barbara Gillies and Clare Claxton, playing at second couple, lost their opening set 5-7 along with the second set but snatched the third set 6-4.
Trish Pryde stepped in at the last minute to play alongside Frankie Hanmer at third couple.
They mirrored the first couple by coming back from 2-5 down to take the first set in a tiebreak and then romped home 6-0, 6-1.
The final score was a 6-3 win for Helensburgh. The ladies’first team faced division 1/1 leadersVA Lanarkshire.
And with the team affected by injuries as well as having to battle windy conditions, it was always going to be tough.
