Vale enjoy first league win

Lennox Herald - - SPORTS -

Vale Juniors recorded their first victory of the competitive season at the weekend when they faced Port Glasgow in the Sectional League Cup.

TheVale squad joined boss Hugh Hamill at Port Glasgow Community Stadium on Saturday to face the Glasgow side in what turned out to be a seven-goal thriller.

It was theVale who opened the scoring five minutes in, courtesy of James Crowhurst. A corner from Lee McGeachy found Craig Cowan, who sent a header towards the goal only to have it blocked. The ball then fell to Crowhurst, who fired the rebound into the roof of the net.

Port Glasgow responded quickly, equalising through Dylan McLaughlin just three minutes later.

The next goal of the match came after the half-hour mark when Vale’s Sean Stewart harried a defender into an error, allowing him to roll the ball into the empty net. Scott Nugent equalised for Port Glasgow just before half-time, despite protests that he was offside.

Vale then stepped up their game and in two consecutive minutes had the score up to 4-2 thanks to brilliant shots by Stephen Griffen and Craig Cowan.

Confident that the victory was theirs, theVale had a slip when they allowed Port Glasgow to net again on 89 minutes, for what proved to be merely a consolation goal.
