Fathers tackle Mudder to support kids’ centre

Gruelling challenge will pay for children’s day out

Lennox Herald - - NEWS - Marc McLean

Two Vale dads are ready to shed blood, sweat, tears, snot and more sweat – just to ensure their kids and friends can enjoy a special day out.

Sandy Meikle and pal Chad Davies are gearing up for the gruelling Tough Mudder challenge at Drumlanrig Castle near Dumfries on June 25.

The lads will endure a 10-mile mud and obstacle course, including everything from braving ice pools and 10,000 volts of electricity to rope swings and dragging themselves through pipes.

Their efforts will raise money to take kids who attend West of Scotland Autism and Aspergers Centre on a day trip, as well as buy new sensory equipment for the youngsters to play with.

Sandy, 32, and wife Pamela, 31, usually attend the centre regularly with their kids Charlie, 4, and six-year-old Steevi Gillies, who have autism.

Chad’s nine-year-old son Jack was also diagnosed with autism and attends the facility in Renton.

Sandy, a taxi driver from Alexandria, said: “The facility has been shut for a few months now for renovations.

“That has meant the kids have missed out on activities and sensory play which they really enjoy.

“We want to raise money to give the children a day trip and buy some muchneeded sensory toys.”

Sandy and Chad will be joined at Tough Mudder by friend Alan Robertson, from Helensburgh, and Newcastle guys Bryn Hood and Daniel Richards, who are related to Pamela. 270516TOUGH_MUDDER_02

The lads are aiming to raise £1000 and have almost reached the halfway mark through online donations via their Justgiving page.

On their webpage Sandy wrote: “My family depends on this place being a success.

“We take all our children here to make friends, play and relax in an environment where we don’t feel awkward when our kids have a meltdown.

“It’s a place where nobody stares or judges because we all know what each parent goes through.

“It has great facilities like a playpark and a sensory room our kids can enjoy safely.”
