New £81m homes plan to get the OK
An ambitious £81million plan to build 1,000 new affordable homes inWest Dunbartonshire is set to be approved tonight (Wednesday).
A proposal, which will underpin the development of houses across the area, will be submitted to the Scottish Government if approved by councillors.
The new Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP) coversWest Dunbartonshire’s house building programme for 2018 to 2023.
The Scottish Government’s More Homes Scotland approach aims to increase the supply of new affordable housing across the country.
And the SHIP details how the council will assist in meeting its target through the delivery of around 1,000 new social rented homes inWest Dunbartonshire.
Priority projects include 15 new council homes in Creveul Court, Alexandria, and 120 new council houses on the sites of Haldane Primary and Aitkenbar Primary.
TheWheatley Group has plans for housing inWestcliff, Stirling Road in Bonhill and Dumbain Road and Carrochan Road in Haldane.
Dunbritton Housing Association are set to build new homes at Dumbarton Harbour, Golfhill Drive and on the Cottage Hospital site.
Meanwhile, Caledonia Housing Association have 167 new homes planned, including in Bellsmyre, Dalquhurn and MitchellWay in Alexandria.
A report which goes to the council’s full meeting tonight reads:“This level of development, averaging over 200 per year, would represent a significantly enhanced affordable housing supply programme exceeding the annual target of 80 units.
“However, as theWest Dunbartonshire Local Housing Strategy evidences there remains a continuing high level demand for affordable housing, in particular for social rent, across the region.”
The delivery of the plan will depend upon appropriate funding from the Scottish Government, with total funding required estimated to be around £81m.
Officers warn that there are risks the ambitious programme will not be met, adding that a number of the projects are at an early stage with site investigations not having been carried out yet.
