We told you last week about how plans for a car wash in a derelict site in Alexandria had been met with fierce opposition.
Residents had rallied to object to the proposal for the gap site on North Street. Local people shared their views on the application which was later thrown out by West Dunbartonshire Council’s planning committee (see page 12 for details).
Georgie Mooney said: “A great idea.To get a decent car wash we either need to take the car to Dumbarton or Dalmuir as the local car wash places leave your car looking like it’s not been cleaned.”
Jackie Whiley added: “It’s not the best place to put it facing right into my house.
“The noise and the fact loads of kids play around cars there are bad enough as it is without bringing more traffic to the area.”
Stewart Bowers made the point: “Totally agree this land needs developed as it is derelict and is a complete eyesore... but not with money making firms. Rather than putting another larger profit making business into a town area vastly ridden with poverty and deprivation, why can’t we put something back into the community to serve and benefit all in the Vale?
“There are already a number of small businesses providing excellent standards of car wash services that provide an affordable and efficient service to the area.
“Local small businesses rely heavily on the existing population of customers to stay afloat.
“Another profit making car wash would only undermine the existing businesses in the area, driving the smaller firms out. This space of land could be extended to a multitude of community-based services for both young and old. For years now local councils have stripped our libraries, play parks, drop-in centres and community centres to the point nothing is left.
“We don’t need more business we need something for our kids and families now.”
Michael McKernan said: “As a resident of North Street I feel there is way too much traffic as it is without making it worse with a car wash at the bottom of the street.
“There are loads of children who play very close to the road as there is nowhere else for them to go.”
Liz Grace said:“This site was supposed to be a kids playground, to replace the one that the new houses at top of the road was built upon.
“Got the houses - no play area for the kids.”
