Happy days of 50 years ago

Reference the ‘Memory Lane’ picture (April issue) showing senior citizens at a rally at the Floral Hall, Gorleston, in 1973, re-produced here.

These rallies were held annually. Folk were picked up at their respective old people’s clubs free of charge and returned, by the corporation’s blue buses.

Thinking back nearly 50 years, the event was co- ordinated between the Great Yarmouth Borough Council and the Corporation Buses.

One of the main organisers of the rallies was Julian Lacey, warden of Shrublands Youth and Adult Centre in Gorleston and through him, the centre’s drama group provided the entertainment, plus centre members.

I was one of the team. We helped serve the refreshments. A big raffle was also held on what were very happy occasions.
