Victorian Maps of England; The county and city maps of Thomas Moule
Edited by John Lee, £30, Batsford/ Pavillion, 9781849944977
Thomas Moule was one of this country’s greatest cartographers and today there is a growing appreciation of things cartographic. Whether this is because of the satnav shrinking map sales or just a widening of historical interest, I don’t know, but this large format volume is stupendous. The ancient landscape, growing industrialisation of expanding towns/cities/railways is here all in magnificent detail. Moule’s career is explained in context as a writer and antiquary, showing his influences and the emerging cartographic revolution in Victorian Britain.
