Crowning Greg as champion would be a home success story for Potters
Greg Harlow, from Ely, is the current indoor bowls world number one. He reached the final in 2017, narrowly missing out to Scotland’s Paul Foster. He won the title in 2010 and the pairs in 2014. He is the only player to have won three consecutive International Open Titles.
As Potters Resort prepares to host the World Championships, Greg, the world number one and bowls ambassador for Potters Resort, was feeling positive.
“The Championships are the highlight of the bowls calendar. It’s the 21st year that Potters has held the Championships and the Potter family has invested more in the sport than anyone else, and that shows in the bowls facilities on offer,” he says.
“The atmosphere of playing in front of big audiences and having millions of people watching us on the BBC during the final week is unique and it’s the biggest audience of any bowls event.
“However, I tend to be focusing so much on my game that I don’t really notice the cameras!
“Being at the Championships sitting in the Arena, is nothing like watching it on TV. It is so exciting and unpredictable, and you will see the best in the world play at their sport.”
Greg’s bowls career started aged 11, when his parents got him involved in the sport.
“Both my parents played bowls and I became interested in it at about six years old. I always loved sport, but I was better at bowls than anything else, and it’s just a fun sport that anyone can do. If I didn’t get pleasure from playing bowls still I would pack it up. I love it and help coach bowls players at Potters throughout the year. We have four-night midweek bowls breaks featuring free tournaments, and about 500 bowlers take part. They are quite competitive, but it’s friendly too.
“It’s fantastic seeing people having a go and enjoying themselves. We also host bowls cruises during the year. Potters is the home of bowls and I also run Potters Bowls Shop, online and on Resort, and we sell an array of bowls, equipment and clothes from all the leading brands.”
Victory for Greg would be a truly ‘home’ win for Potters.
