Paul Harley, £17.95, Mascot Media, 9781999845766

From gargoyle waterspouts and benchends to green man carvings and roof bosses, our ecclesiastical heritage in the county is famous worldwide. Norwich photographer Paul Harley has searched throughout Norfolk to photograph the assorted carvings that can be found, whether it is a cat and kitten, a bishop, devil or beast of the medieval imagination. Looking at these carvings, especially the human figures, of a peasant in the stocks for example at Grimston, we feel closer to this long lost period as the carvings are so lifelike and real. The face of a medieval person is reinterpreted in wood and stone but the centuries seem closer than before. Look at the priest in prayer at Merton and feel his thoughts.

Fascinating. Fully illustrated in black and white.
