UNIVERSITY LECTURER ‘ARTIST’ ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH HER FEATHERED FRIENDS

A WOMAN who is devoted to feeding pigeons on the Brayford Pool in Lincoln every morning is encouraging people to spend more time with them.

Dr Annie Morrad, a senior lecturer in photography at the University of Lincoln and a mix-media, multi-disciplined artist, said she has always liked pigeons, “even as a child.”

She said her art looks at interactions with non-human species, and she not only feeds the pigeons, but also creates short films with them every evening. Spotted every morning loyally feeding an eager but friendly flurry of pigeons near the university campus, Dr Morrad said she has received positive responses from passers-by as well as negative.

In response to people who don’t like pigeons, Dr Morrad said: “Just hang out with them a bit more, they’re very clean and highly intelligent. They have a magnetism that links with the magnetic earth which is how they manage to navigate.

“They hang out with us, so for some reason they must like us. I’ve always liked them, even as a child. The main thing is to raise awareness through the arts. People come and speak to me about them.”

She added: “I get up early before work and sometimes sit with them for an hour and make sure they have water, even in this weather. The positivity outweights the negativity.

“There are some people who will just tut at me and ask me why I’m doing it and ask me not to do it near them. I say I’m really sorry they feel that way, they’re actually really gorgeous and they don’t do any harm in terms of what we think they do.”

Dr Morrad also said she does a ritual with them every morning when she leaves them by saying “byesy-bye” and making a child-like action with her hand. She said she tries to open awareness of the one language communicated by all species by trying to tap into how the pigeons interact with the camera as a different visual language.

Dr Morrad has a website where she showcases some of her work.

POLICE have issued a photo of a man they wish to speak to in connection with an alleged stabbing near a Lincolnshire McDonald’s.

Officers from Lincolnshire Police believe he may be able to help them with their inquiries into the incident, which is said to have occurred near the Lincoln restaurant on Sunday, November 26.

Anyone who knows who he is, or who has information that can assist with their investigation, should contact DS Nigel Brailsford via email or by calling 101. In an earlier update issued shortly after 10am on November 30, a spokesperson said a 20-year-old man from the Sheffield area had been released on police bail while the force continued its inquiries.

Officers were called to the city centre at around 6.21pm following reports that an 18-year-old was found with a suspected stab wound.

He had sought help at the nearby train station and was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening or lifealtering.

The spokesperson added: “If you have any CCTV, dashcam footage from the area of McDonald’s or the Nationwide Building Society around 6pm on Sunday, please get in contact with us.”
