Riverside walkway reopens after lots of challenges

WEATHER AND DIFFICULT ACCESS ATTACHED TO GRADE II LISTED BUILDING SLOWED COMPLETION OF VITAL REPAIRS

LINCOLN’S historic Glory Hole pathway has finally reopened after a closure of more than a year. The public right of f way was closed in February 2023 after r Lincolnshire County Council deemed d it unsafe following a partial collapse.

Work has been carried out intermit- tently ever since. It was originally y thought that only minor repairs would d be needed but investigations found d extensive works would be required.

Underwater divers discovered a crumbling underside and it was found that wooden beams were fractured and slabs were beginning to lift.

The Glory Hole path reopened on Friday, April 5 after a further week-long delay caused by weather challenges and the discovery of old timbers.

Councillor Richard Davies, executive member for highways at Lincolnshire Council, described the project as “challenging”.

He said: “I’m really glad to announce that our improvements to Lincoln’s Glory Hole are now fully complete – meaning that the footway is back open as usual.

“Getting to this point has been a long, arduous process for everyone involved, simply because of the nature of Glory Hole and where it sits.

“Being a hard-to-reach, historic public right of way – on the bank of a live and very active riverway that’s also attached to a Grade II listed building – has proven incredibly challenging.

“Throughout this process, we’ve had to deal with several external agencies and had to overcome difficult access on site which led to the team having to be innovative with the design solution to ensure the safety of everyone involved.”

He added: “We got there in the end, so I want to thank everyone affected for their patience while we dealt with this unique and challenging repair project, right in the heart of Lincoln. Lincoln.”
