THE Labour Party is celebrating across Lincoln after strengthening their control of the City of Lincoln Council and snatching three seats from the Conservatives in last week’s local elections.

Labour has managed to secure four additional seats in the city, whilst losing only one, defying expectations of a significant loss following the cancellation of the overcrowded Christmas Market last year due to safety concerns.

The party, which was due to elect a new leader on Tuesday said it had the vision to build 3000 new houses, fight hard against poverty and to ‘end the situation where some residents live 10 years less than others.’

Two young teachers: Annie Currier won in Hartsholme ward and Laura Danese in Birchwood ward.

A young graduate of the University of Lincoln, Callum Roper, has become the new councillor in Moreland ward.

The party was expected to suffer heavy losses after facing criticism when the popular festive market was called off.

Labour won eight of the 11 wards up for election with the Liberal Democrats taking two and the Conservatives holding one. The turnout

Callum Roper relieved to have kept hold of Witham ward which the Tories won by only 15 votes.

Hamish Falcolner, Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate for the whole of Lincoln and also the villages of Waddington, Skellingthorpe and Bracebridge is the son of Tony Blair’s former flatmate, Charlie Falcolner.

He said: “I think this is quite a significant set of results. Whisper it, but it’s very exciting that we beat the Tories so badly.

“If voters are furious about the Christmas market, they’ve got a funny way of showing it. “If this streak continues, we might look back and see this was the point when Lincoln starts to look more like a metropolitan Labour/Liberal city.” “The only fly in the ointment: Labour lost Glebe ward after a massive swing to the Liberal Democrats. “The Lib Dems also beat Labour by over 400 votes in Abbey Ward. “I’m not complacent about this, we’re going to have to work hard to rebuild trust in Abbey and Glebe.” The new council composition will be: Labour 23; Liberal Democrat 5; Conservative 5.

The Glebe ward, previously held by outgoing leader Rik Metcalfe, was contested by ex-police officer and Labour candidate Duncan Spencer. However, he was ultimately beaten by the Liberal Democrat candidate James Brown. One-third of the council was up for election, with 11 of the 33 seats available when the polls opened on Thursday, May 2.

In the Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner vote, Tory Marc Jones managed to cling onto his position, although with a significantly diminished majority.
