We’ve al­ways been fans of West Elm’s laid-back/ur­ban/ in­dus­trial aes­thetic, but have no­ticed things have been mov­ing in more of a re­fined di­rec­tion for its new range of fur­ni­ture. Dubbed the ‘New Mod­ern’, the col­lec­tion is sleeker and more de­sign-led than you might ex­pect from the founded-in-brook­lyn brand, yet it’s all still ver­sa­tile. A sofa can make a state­ment and look great and still be com­fort­able, just as a sculp­tural ta­ble can do good work as a home­work sta­tion. The vi­sion is all down to cre­ative di­rec­tor Jo­hanna Uuras­jarvi, who has tapped into her Fin­nish her­itage. ‘To me, the New Mod­ern is all about de­sign­ing for the way we live now – clean lines and strik­ing sil­hou­ettes that still stand up to real life,’ she says. While many of the pieces are in­spired by a global vi­sion, lo­cal touches are used to keep the col­lec­tion on-brand. One of the stand­out pieces is the new Luna chair, cre­ated to dou­ble as the place you can in­dulge in cock­tail-hour con­ver­sa­tion or curl up with a good book. Its soft curves are as much about cradling as sim­ple sup­port and the peek­a­boo cutout in the back feels like it’s giv­ing a flirty wink. If a chair can do such a thing…
