LUXE INDUSTRIAL
Take a more considered stance on the rough-and-ready aesthetic with an unexpected touch of luxury
‘The latest industrial look is all about layers of Texture; polished plaster or exposed brick walls; concrete, zinc or stainless-steel work surfaces; metallic or rough-sawn wood cabinetry’ Sam Hart, designer, Roundhouse
The abandoned factory vibe is so last year (and the year before that); the time has come to reinvent the industrial look for a more sophisticated audience. To successfully tread the tightrope between building site and glamour puss, it’s important to pay attention to the finishes. Smart, crisp connections that honour skilled craftsmanship are being favoured over the raggedy-edged, hand-knitted concretes and exposed ducting of previous industriallyinspired kitchens. Neatniks will appreciate the improved cleanliness and hygiene on offer.
As with any industrial interpretation, a strong focus on materials is essential. Go for transformative textures such as vintage leather, polished steel and quartz, which will help to bring an element of softness and shine to the proceedings. ‘Metal and concrete surfaces are still prevalent, but they are now being paired with warm tones and luxurious finishes, for a deeper contrast that is much more sophisticated, not to mention inviting, in today’s open-plan kitchens,’ says Simon Boocock, managing director of CRL Stone.
Complete the story with a touch of brass – not too much – and perhaps a glam light fitting that will help to sharpen the contrast between rough and refined.
