Top tips and things to consider to ensure a home office works hard for you

‘As important as it is to create a functional workspace, it’s also crucial to make it beautiful and inviting. We would suggest mixing a contemporary desk with a vintage chair, or vice versa, to create a space with a timeless appeal.’ Holly Canham, Canham & Hart

‘Whether you’re working from a screen or reading fine print, you need suitable lighting to avoid strain on your eyes. This doesn’t necessarily mean dazzlingly bright – as with other spaces in the home, varied and layered lighting is best. Aim for good overhead lighting and recessed downlights, combined with desk lights.’ Clare Gaskin, Clare Gaskin Interiors

‘A desk positioned in front of a window that allows access to both sides gives you the option to look out or into the room, depending on your mood. A sheer blind will help keep out unwanted glare from the sun, while a blind or curtain in a beautiful fabric will give the space a softer feel and make it more homely.’ Natalia Miyar, Natalia Miyar Atelier

‘Office storage should be easily accessible and complement the aesthetic of the room. High street stores such as Muji have clean, minimal-style storage solutions that will fit seamlessly into most rooms without detracting from the rest of the decor. If you do wish to make storage more of a feature, leather-bound filing can add a more traditional element to the space.’ Paul Fishpool, Rigby & Rigby

Take the time to plan your new study space. ‘Comfort is crucial when deciding on all furniture for the home, but this is especially important for items you will be using as frequently as a home office desk and chair,’ says Paul Fishpool of Rigby & Rigby. ‘There are key design elements to consider for these, such as the height of the desk if you have a fixed-height chair – the worktop surface must be a comfortable working height while you’re seated. Check also that the top isn’t so thick that your legs won’t fit comfortably underneath it.’
