My happy place
Art editor Paula Jardine on the perfect spot to experience an Italian Renaissance sunset
PIAZZALE MICHELANGELO, FLORENCE
I often think of the view of Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo. It’s an end-of-day sort of place, when you’re done with the culture and the art and the museums and need a moment to take it all in. For it’s here you can soak up a whole cityscape, the panoramic vista challenging you to get back out and see more again tomorrow. As the sun sets on the terracotta tiles, harmonised by the bell tolls of Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore in the distance, the scene before you is a symphony of Italian beauty. A truly magical and unforgettable view.
