6 DUAL-PURPOSE MIRRORS

Mirror, mirror on the wall, these are the fairest and most practical of them all…

-

Incoming interiors alert: a stylish mirror that also incorporates clever storage or a shelving element is what we all need in our lives. Good news is there’s a swathe of uber-modern designs coming to the fore. Some are wall-mounted, others are floor-standing, however all share a common thread of combining style and substance. Bring it on.

WORK OF ART

Like a slender piece of reflective sculpture to be wall mounted, the new oval-shaped Backstage mirror from Italian design house Porada is made from solid canaletta walnut with a dual-purpose wall attachment discreetly positioned behind and covered in Cuoietto hide leather no less. Because the mirror sits proud from the wall with the attachment behind it, it means that there’s additional hidden space for what Porada terms a ‘coin tray’, but it looks sizeable enough to hold a small selection of daily essentials – reading glasses, jewellery and maybe that designer watch you have been promising yourself… £1,950, Nava & Arosio at Porada (porada.it)

GOOD LOOKING

There’s something distinctly architectural about this powder-coated, metal, circular wall-hanging mirror from high-street favourite John Lewis & Partners. It’s part of its Design Project collection, a rich offering of chic contemporary homeware at super-reasonable price points. What you get is a mirror which has been stripped back, in the best possible sense, to its core function and constructed rather beautifully to reflect design value for money. No fuss and no frills, just wellmade, functional design. Design Project No.120 circle mirror with shelf, £250, John Lewis & Partners (johnlewis.com)

A STANDING OVATION

A design coup surely? Because this design maintains a beautiful reflective facade while hiding its storage and clothes hanging potential out of sight behind the front-facing mirror panel. Even if you do catch sight of the storage from the side angle, the low-level incorporated shelf is aesthetically pleasing as it’s crafted out of solid American oak and, of course, we trust that you would be hanging only your finest fashion on the rail… A modern and practical piece of mirror then? That’s a definite yes. Brunel lean mirror with hanging space, £299, Rob Scarlett for Heal’s (heals.com)
