A commitment to using sustainable materials drove the selection of finishes in this project. Reclaimed terracotta floor tiles are finished with a natural sealant to give a washed-out appearance and have been carried up the walls to form high skirting. Other raw finishes include the clay plaster ceiling and custom-built oak joinery. ‘Natural finishes like clay render and terracotta require less energy to produce than man-made fabrics. They also last longer and develop a rich patina over time,’ says Greg Walton, director and co-founder of Studio MCW. ‘Clay also absorbs toxins from the air, improving air quality in the home,’ says David Mcgahon, who is also director and co-founder of the practice.
