1 CREATIVE WITH COPPER
The use of copper on nearby university buildings in Cambridge provided the initial seed of inspiration for this extension by Butcher Bayley Architects. ‘From this starting point we developed a colourful materials palette with a focus on bright, bold choices, while still being sympathetic to the existing building and surrounding conservation area,’ says Carrie Bayley, co-founder and director at the studio. To create a similar look, stick to a coherent scheme of motifs and colours throughout your extension. ‘For instance, while we decided not to use copper inside, ensuring that it remained a special, stand-out feature, we did draw inspiration from the colour of the metal when designing the kitchen,’ says Carrie.
