SEE YOU IN PALM SPRINGS

Mid-century marvels, mountainous skylines and a cocktail hour that’s always on hand

-

GO FOR…

The mood. It’s not just the sun that scorches in the desert town of Palm Springs, a three-hour drive from L A. The architecture (mid century), the art scene (contemporary) and the restaurant culture all ensure this charming enclave is hot right now. It’s a place where you can see vast works from the biggest names in American sculpture in the morning, take a dip in the afternoon and be having cocktails by 5pm, surrounded by an enticing sense of unreality that gives every moment the haziness – and hedonistic quality – of a dream.

STAY FOR…

The design. Palm Springs is known for mid-century buildings and it has steadfastly held onto this aesthetic. Hotels like the Ace are designed as if Don Draper was expected at any moment, while a giant Marilyn Monroe statue at the main intersection sets the tone for everything else. A little tongue in cheek and very, very fun.

SLEEP IN…

The Dive. A series of cabanas set around a large pool, this is desert life at its best, with daybeds in deckchair stripes just meant for Instagramming your breakfast on. It’s also in a perfect location, halfway between the city centre and surrounding sensational mountains.

EAT OUT…

At Sherman’s Deli. It’s not fancy but this Palm Springs institution goes large on American classics and every celeb who’s ever been in town has their picture plastered on the wall.

AND DON’T MISS…

Aside from the incredible Palm Springs Art Museum you must also wander through Moorten Botanical Garden. Weird and wonderful cacti are all that flourish here, ideal for inspiring a tropical garden of your own.
