Openers shine as Wanderers end season on a high

-

CARMARTHEN Wanderers Seconds completed their Premier League 2nd XI West season with an excellent 120-run victory against a depleted Ammanford.

Batting first, the Wanderers opening pair of Andrew Harley (88) and Mark Wilson (87) put on a whopping 170 for the first wicket, dominating the bowling as they scored boundaries all around the ground.

Harley finished the season as the league’s top scorer, amassing 520 runs, and Wilson also enjoyed a fine campaign.

Ifan Knott added 14 and with the experienced Kev Jones (28no) clubbing five boundaries during the last over, the Wanderers closed on an imposing 278-6.

Tomos Roach and Matthew Davies shared a couple of wickets each.

In reply, the only Ammanford resistance came from Tomos Roach (37) and Osian Jones (34) and they were all out for 158 with 13 overs to go.

A fine spell by 13-year-old Dan Thomas saw him claim 2-26 in his eight overs, while leading wickettaker Steff Jones took 3-37.

Skipper Ian Taylor mopped up the tail with 3-20.

The Wanderers finished fifth in the tab;e, with Ammanford seventh, though they could be overtaken by Swansea who have one game to play at Ynysygerwn.

Wanderers captain Taylor said: “I am delighted with the victory which has enabled us to finish fifth, which is a good effort after our struggles in May, mainly due to availability of players.

“We have blooded half a dozen junior players into our team, which will hopefully bear fruit over the coming seasons.”
