Cardis fire out warning

-

HEADS were turned in Costcutter League circles after a young Cardigan Town outfit saw off Llandysul 5-1 at King George V Playing Field.

The Magpies, who included a number of 16 and 17-year-olds in their line-up,face another major test tonight when crossing the Teifi to take on early leaders St Dogmaels.

Last season’s runners-up Saints got off to a flyer with a 4-0 win at Llanboidy and four days later brushed aside Ffostrasol 6-1 at School Field.

After Cardigan went down 4-2 against Crannog on Wednesday, some feared the worst for their clash with Llandysul, who recently appointed Gwynfor Edwards of Llanelli as manager.

But Town turned on the style and roared to a 5-1 win after outplaying the visitors for lengthy periods.

The entertaining contest was marred by the sending off of Cardigan goalkeeper Steff Marsden for a foul outside the penalty area and a visiting defender for handling on the goal line.

Town went ahead midway through the first half when Steff Davies crossed for Tom Gardner to slot home, but the visitors soon squared matters through Harry Wilson.

After the goal-line incident, midfielder Ben Davies netted the penalty to nudge Town ahead before the interval.

The home side added three further goals through Steff Davies (2) and a hard-pressed Llandysul defender put through his own goal.

There were also celebrations across the Teifi where St Dogmaels sounded a clear warning to their rivals that they will be contenders again this season.

Saints led 3-1 with 10 minutes remaining and finished strongly with a late goal flourish.

It was all over bar the shouting at the break with the Teifi Estuary villagers leading 3-0 thanks to goals from Peter Almond, Louis Harding and Chris Morgan.

Although Wanderers pulled a goal back early in the second half, Saints dominated and further goals came via central midfielder Adam Williams who bagged a brace, and 16-year-old substitute winger Luke Jones.

Newcastle Emlyn followed up a 3-1 midweek win over Bargod Rangers by coming out on top 2-0 against hard-working Aberaeron Reserves at Parc Emlyn.

The goals against Aeron came in the first half through former Bargod favourite Julian Lynch and 16-year-old Mikey John.

Felinfach also boast a 100 per cent record after two outings, the Milkmen winning 3-2 against Aberaeron Reserves in midweek and three days later edging home 4-3 at Llanboidy.

The visiting marksmen at Cae Dandre were Kevin Boyes, who netted twice, Joe Jenkins and Sol Kalani.
