FERA BATTLE TO THRILLING WIN

YSTALYFERA and Waunarlwyd­d produced a thrilling encounter on the opening weekend of the One West Central season, with the Swansea Valley side edging a 29-28 victory.

Bowdy Davies, Luc Caines and Steff Jones added to a penalty try, while the reliable boot of Steff Castle added a penalty and two conversion­s.

Leighton Lamb, Nick Jones and Robert Bagley scored tries for Waun, and Lee Evans added three penalties and two conversion­s.

Another high-scoring affair saw Glynneath, who have come down from the National Championsh­ip, beat Kenfig Hill 41-37.

Joe Williams and Craig Tennant both scored twice for Glynneath. Harry Morgan and Sean Tennant were also on the scoresheet.

Jack O’Reilly kicked five points and Dylan Francis six.

Kenfig Hill crossed for five tries in response, Tom Briggs getting two of them.

Owen Davies, Dan Jones and Josh Dixon grabbed the others. Nicky Giles kicked a drop-goal, a penalty and three conversion­s.

Bonymaen are tipped to be one of the title challenger­s this season and they got their season off to a perfect start with a 21-14 triumph over promoted Brynaman.

Chris Moore and Lawrence Thomas got the tries for Bonymaen, with Richard Cunniffe sealing the win with a conversion and three penalties.

Craig Jones and Joel Spurway replied for Brynaman. Jones and Connor Edgecombe added conversion­s.

Skewen’s return to One West Central ended in defeat as they lost 7-3 to Tondu.

Anthony Buselli’s penalty was all they could muster.

Josh Tatchell converted Aled Farmer-Jones’s try to ensure the Waterwheel­ers made a positive start to the season.

Aberavon Quins suffered a 33-7 defeat to Maesteg Celtic. Liam Oates crossed for Quins’ sole try, which was Bynea’s Nathan Baker tries to evade Penybanc’s Carl Rees.

Jonathan Davies bagged a brace for Celtic, with Scott James, Ryan Lovett and Lloyd Jenkins also on the scoresheet. Matthew Harris kicked all the conversion­s.
