Saints keep start going

-

LAST season’s Costcutter League runners-up St Dogmaels have had a flying start to the new season, notching up four wins from as many starts, while Crannog and Newcastle Emlyn can boast 100% records after three games.

St Dogmaels started with a 4-0 win at Llanboidy, swept aside Ffostrasol 6-1, beat Cardigan Town 4-2 and on Saturday made it four on the bounce by emerging 2-1 winners at Llandysul.

The last time Saints lost was in an Easter Monday League Cup semi-final tie before Christmas.

Following a shock 5-1 loss away to Cardigan, a strong Llandysul team bounced back to inflict a 2-1 defeat on champions Lampeter Town before hosting Saints.

The Swallows were given a big boost with the arrival of ex-Welsh Schools goalkeeper Dafydd Jones, who has had Welsh League experience with Ammanford Town and Garden Village.

After going down 2-1 against Saints, new Llandysul manager Gwynfor Edwards said he was hoping to bring in a further three players in the near future.

Saints dominated for lengthy periods and the only surprise was that they did not win by more.

The game was marred by the sending off of two players; when Rhys Prowse of St Dogmaels and teenage home winger Ifan Shon clashed, both were red-carded by Neil Lewis.

Llandysul were gifted the lead after five minutes with a sensational own goal by defender Dan Jones, whose attempted 25-yard back pass flew into the net.

But Jason Williams and colleagues were in the ascendancy before the break after two strikes by man-of-the-match Louis Harding, who also saw an effort rebound off the crossbar.

Saints’ Peter Almond was twice denied in one-to-one situations with goalkeeper Nathan Jones, while Llandysul nearly salvaged a point in the dying moments but Aaron Walters saved well.

Crannog had to pull out all the stops to gain a 2-1 away win against a battling Felinfach side.

Right-sided midfielder Robbie Evans fired Crannog ahead in the opening hald and Rhys Davies slotted a penalty after the break.

Under new manager Terry Witts, Lampeter Town put a narrow defeat at Llandysul behind them when coming out on top 3-0 against a youthful Ffostrasol at Troedyrhiw Park.

All the goals came before the interval through frontrunner Jason Jones (2) and central midfielder and skipper Marc Evans.

Aberaeron Reserves and Llanboidy were successful for the first time as Aeron beat Cardigan Town 1-0 at Square Field and Llanboidy won 2-0 against visitors Bargod Rangers at Cae Dandre.

Newcastle Emlyn were involved in the JD Welsh Cup (South) first qualifying round but lost 4-1 at home to Neath premier league outfit Glynneath Town.
