Coalbrook Surgery flu clinic Patients over 65 years and under 65 in an ‘at risk’ group are eligible for a free flu vaccinatio­n. Flu vaccines will be given to patients registered at the surgery every Monday and Wednesday between noon and 1pm and 5pm to 6pm. Starting the first week of October this service will continue until the vaccine supplies run out. The Wonder of Elvis Tickets are on sale for London’s Denmark Street Big Band production of Elvis Presley by internatio­nal cabaret star Delvis. Bryn WI September meeting The president welcomed all back after the summer break, then invited Flo to lead the ladies in the singing of Jerusalem. Apologies were received from Loraine, Christine J, Una, Elizabeth, Estelle and Valmai and birthday greetings were passed to Jo, Hazel, Estelle and Marianne, who was presented with flowers for her 80th birthday. Beth had taken a card to former member Marilyn for her 80th birthday and Wilma will be visiting with flowers. It was with sadness that the ladies were told that Marilyn R had passed away on the morning of Tuesday, September 4. A condolence card was put out for signatures and the meeting held a minutes’ silence. The new Bryn Community Hall Committee is holding an afternoon tea on September 22 to which all are invited at a charge of £2 each. Tickets must be bought and paid for before the event. Any profits from this event will go towards the purchase of a defibrilla­tor to be placed outside Bryn Hall. Christine R and Stephanie undertook a first aid course during the summer break. In addition Pam R and Lynda S also have first aid training. Pam showed all a framed article of Brenda Lewis concerning her Llanelli Star award in 2016. Brenda’s daughter, Lynn, has loaned this to show members and a copy will be taken to keep in the archives. Bryn’s 2018 programme won highly commended in County programme competitio­n and Bryn did very well at the annual show. The Illtyd Group Keep the Home Fires Burning tea at the Selwyn Samuel Centre in July was much enjoyed. The profits will be used by the Illtyd Group Committee to buy sound equipment. An invitation has been received from Felinfoel to a tea on September 19. Please note that this clashes with the fashion show at the Diplomat. The evening’s speaker was Val Beynon, who gave an engaging talk about her early memories whilst living in Pontyberem, Cwmbach and Pwll and brought along with her many items of interest, such as clothing and household goods going back as far as the early and mid-20th Century. Many members remembered times when there was no indoor ty bach and baths were taking on a Friday night in a tin bath before a coal fire. Pam R gave the vote of thanks.
