Cwm seal cup passage

-

SECONDHALF goals from strikers Chris Allen and Ashley Curtis were enough to ensure Cwmamman United’s progress into the next round of the Nathaniel Welsh League Cup with a 2-0 defeat of Newport City.

Cwm missed an early opportunity when Curtis fired his shot just wide.

Further half-chances followed, but Newport stood their ground and some well-timed tackles kept Cwm out.

The visitors were dealt a major blow when central defender Andrew Muscat had to leave the field with a nasty facial injury.

With only six minutes of the second half gone, Cwm striker Allen steered the ball into the net at the back post.

Cwm were now able to manage the game at their own pace and in the final 10 minutes Newport’s Patrick Pope was sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the game.

Five minutes later Curtis finally got his reward when he fired home to ensure Cwm’s progress.

Meanwhile, Cwmamman claimed a 0-0 midweek draw with Port Talbot Town in division one of the Welsh League.

But Cwm will feel they dropped two points as they dominated the contest, with 12 attempts on target to five by the visitors.

Cwm had many chances to break the deadlock in the first half, with Port Talbot clearing one effort off the line and then enjoying a slice of good fortune when Ryan Hurlow’s shot rattled the post and rebounded out of play.

Port Talbot were always a threat on the counter and it took some resolute defence from the home team to thwart their attacks.

The second half saw Cwmamman try to break down their opponents but again chances went begging, with Ashley Curtis, Ryan Thomas and Ryan Hurlow all going close.

Cwmamman’s next game is on Saturday when they host local rivals Ammanford Town. It will be the first time the teams have faced each other in division one of the Welsh League.
