Pembrey poised to play host to major athletics event

-

PEMBREY Country Park hosts the Welsh Athletics Road Relay Championships on Saturday.

The event, organised by Welsh Athletics and Carmarthenshire County Council, provides the chance for both established and up-and-coming endurance runners to compete against each other in a competitive team format.

It will use the recently opened National Closed Road Cycle Circuit and additional paths around the park.

Swansea Harriers, Cardiff AAC, Lliswerry Runners, Amman Valley Harriers, Parc Bryn Bach, Newport Harriers, Port Talbot Harriers, Carmarthen Harriers, Llanelli AC, Aberdare VAAC, Bridgend AC, Neath Harriers, Menai Track and Field, Brecon AC and Blaenau Gwent AC were among the age-group winners in 2017 and will return to defend their respective titles.

Races includes a primary school challenge as well as full junior programme for under-13s, under-15s, under-17s, seniors and masters categories. The action gets under way at 11.30am for primary schools with the senior athletes taking centre stage in the concluding event at 1.50pm.

Dewi Griffiths and Josh Griffiths helped Swansea Harriers take the senior men’s title 12 months ago and will be hoping for more success this time around.

A Gwent League Cross Country meeting and the Welsh Cross Country Championships are other races that have already been confirmed at Pembrey over the course of the winter season and take place in November and February respectively.
